The Story of a Woman Who Refused to Give Up

Rose in her younger years — long before motherhood entered the picture.

Everybody loves to be celebrated on their birthday. 🎂

But sometimes the person who really deserves to be celebrated isn’t the one whose birthday it is.

Sometimes the real hero of the story is the mother who made that birthday possible.

Many years ago, there was a woman named Rose who was trying to leave an abusive marriage and start a new life.

She had been married for several years and had never conceived. At some point, she had come to believe she might never have children at all.

But the marriage had become unhealthy, and Rose had already made the difficult decision to leave. She had been trying for quite some time to get a divorce and move forward with her life.

Life was complicated then.

Around that time, while she was working as the maintenance secretary for the airline, she met a dashing young Air Micronesia pilot. Somewhere between those two worlds, life took an unexpected turn.

And then… oops.

She became pregnant.

At the time she was still legally married, even though she had already been trying to leave that relationship. The pregnancy ultimately forced the situation to a conclusion, and the marriage she had been trying to escape finally came to an end.

So before that baby was even born, life was already messy, uncertain, and more than a little scary.

A few months into the pregnancy, things became frightening.

Doctors told Rose she would probably miscarry. They warned that if the pregnancy continued, the baby would likely be retarded. Eventually, one of them suggested she should get an abortion.

Many women, faced with that kind of fear and uncertainty and being told by the “experts” what they should do, might have felt they had no other choice.

But she refused.

She believed she had been blessed with this pregnancy, and she was going to see it through.

But if she wanted to try to keep the pregnancy, it was going to be difficult. She would need weekly injections and would essentially have to stay off her feet for months. She was told she couldn’t work during the last several months of the pregnancy.

So that’s what she did.

Week after week, she endured the painful shots she was required to take. Month after month, she lived with the uncertainty of whether the pregnancy would even make it to the end.

Thankfully, she wasn’t completely alone during that time. She was living with her mother, and that was a huge help while she was unable to work.

Rose’s mother understood exactly what it meant to face a difficult road. She had raised two children as a single mother herself, so she fully supported her daughter and the decision to see that pregnancy through.

She made sure her daughter had a roof over her head and food on the table while she was unable to work.

But the medical bills were another matter.

Strange to say, to this day, Rose still isn’t entirely sure how all the medical bills got paid during that time.

But one thing is certain. Air Mike, as everyone called Air Micronesia, was a very close-knit family. Somewhere along the way, it’s likely that a guardian angel quietly pulled a few strings to keep the insurance going.

Air Micronesia, affectionately known as “Air Mike.”

Finally, after all those months, it was time for the baby to arrive.

But apparently that baby wasn’t going to make it easy.

Instead of coming into the world the normal way, the baby decided to show up breech. Not headfirst. Not feet first.

From what the doctors could tell, that baby was trying to enter the world butt-first, which may have been the earliest sign that this baby was going to have a few opinions.

The doctors tried to turn the baby, but nothing worked.

Meanwhile, Rose had been given pain medication that made her agitated and disoriented. At one point, they even had to restrain her because she was so out of it.

Eventually, the doctors had no choice but to rush her into an emergency C-section.

And after everything she had gone through for months to keep that pregnancy alive, she didn’t even get to see her baby right away.

The medication knocked her out so completely that she didn’t wake up for three days.

Three days before she even saw her baby.

Three days before she could hold the tiny person she had fought so hard to bring into the world.

That baby was me.

My parents eventually did get married when I was a year and two weeks old. And in two weeks, they will celebrate their 53rd wedding anniversary.

At their 25th Anniversary, where they renewed their vows

But every year on my birthday, I think about what came before all of that

The woman who refused to give up.

The woman who endured months of pain, injections, fear, and uncertainty because she already loved the life growing inside her.

And in truth, this was only one of the many challenges she has faced throughout her life with grace and strength.

So yes, today might technically be my birthday.

But if anyone deserves to be celebrated today, it’s her.

Thank you, Mom. ❤️

Because of you, I get to be here.

And that’s the story of how one very determined woman brought another woman with a few opinions into the world.

If you’re lucky enough to still have your mom, give her a hug today.
